Shielded, downward-facing, zero-glare fittings that put light where you want it and nowhere else.
The test is simple: can you see the lamp from across the garden? If you can, it is glare rather than lighting, and it is making the garden harder to see, not easier. A well-shielded fitting shows you the lit surface and hides the source.
Everything here has negligible output above the horizontal, which is what stops it contributing to skyglow — and, more immediately, what stops it shining into your neighbour's bedroom. Light spilling onto someone else's property can amount to a statutory nuisance, and it is nearly always caused by one badly aimed fitting.
