Paths and Steps
The only garden lighting that has a job rather than an effect: you need to see where the ground changes.
Two rules worth following. Light the surface, not the eye — a shielded bollard or a recessed step light puts light on the tread and nothing in your face, and a glaring fitting halfway down a path makes the path harder to see, not easier. And space them further apart than you think: overlapping pools of light read as an airport runway. Aim for light, gap, light rather than a continuous ribbon.
Step lights go in the riser, not the tread. If the steps are already built, the surface-mounted versions do the same job without cutting anything.
