Walls and Fences

A lit wall gives a garden a back to it. In a small garden it is often the most useful thing you can light, because it makes the boundary a surface rather than a void.

Graze, don't flood. A wall washer mounted close to the wall and aimed along it rakes across the texture and makes brick, stone or render look like something. The same fitting mounted further out just makes a bright patch. Brick-sized fittings set into the wall itself do the opposite job — they mark the wall rather than light it.

One caution: a lit boundary is a lit boundary for your neighbours too, and for anything using the hedge line to get around. Shield it, aim it down, and put it on a timer — see Dark Sky and Wildlife.
