Summer Evenings

The things people buy when the garden is suddenly somewhere they want to be at nine o'clock: festoon over the terrace, solar down the border, spotlights on the tree you have been meaning to light for three years.

Most of this needs no cable, no electrician and no planning — it can be up the same afternoon it arrives. Which is the whole point of it.

Two things worth having in the cupboard before the first warm weekend: spare festoon lamps and a pack of connectors. They are what you discover you need at six o'clock on the day people are coming.
